Wednesday; Fun Work Day

Wednesday was a day of miscellaneous  projects done around the foundation. We started our day with a delicious breakfast provided by the ever so vibrant kitchen staff, consisting of eggs with salsa, grilled plantains, and sausage. Proceeding breakfast the Erica and Leah put up a word wall for the kids and the boys went to the roof to fix the pump,once and for all, after three trips to the local hardware store. Following that we all began a project for Mama Doris, we started by digging a trench around the outer wall of the foundation,  after that we mixed concrete using one of the few power tools they have at the foundation, then we used the concrete to secure the rocks into the trench to beautify the property. Drew,David and one of the foundation kids went with Rolando to gather fire wood from the local sawmill for the wood burning stove. Following the projects some of the group made the trip to Comayagua to sight see and shop. We visited the cathedral which contained the oldest clock in the western hemisphere. Then we walked around town and entered some local shops. It was interesting to interact with the culture and see their way of life. 

Upon returning from Comayagua it was time to begin the church service which kids have been arriving for since 8 o'clock that morning. Pastor Ausher and his wife had arrived while we were gone, and were over joyed to be able to spread Christ's love using their God given gifts. It was cool to see the children piling in the church and peaking through the windows just to get a glimpse of what was going on inside. They were so tentative and longing to learn the word of God. Over 250 people in the chapel of all ages. (and without offering food)

Personally my favorite part of the day was giving the foundation children there shoes. They were just so happy and thankful to be receiving something  thats seems so insignificant to us but made that child's whole week.  For me this was one of the best days of the week over all.

Giving Thanks

When our children need a pair of shoes (or two), we travel to Target or the Oviedo Mall and buy the shoes for them. It is a short drive, with the most time spent mulling over which pair to buy. Once that decision is made, we simply take the shoes to the cashier, hand over our American Express, and the shoes are ours. It is an easy process.

Here in La Paz, the process is not so easy. Today, when families all over America sat down to celebrate Thanksgiving,the children of La Paz walked from miles around to wait for the start of Operation Barefoot. Many walked in tattered shoes, or in some case,none at all. They came early to wait their turn for a pair of new shoes and socks provided by the congregation of St. Luke's and the Orlando area. One by one, they were called, and sat as their feet were washed and a new pair of shoes fitted. For a brief time at least, joy overcame them and it was as if they received an early Christmas present. They had a reason to be thankful.

We are so blessed in America and have many reasons to be thankful every day. Here, it is often difficult to find those reasons. The Bible says to give thanks in all circumstances, though in practice this is often a challenging instruction. The children of La Paz were thankful today, as were we.

"Corre! Corre tio David!!" yelled the children as we played a pick-up game of tag. I was the target of the little boy who was "it," and he was chasing me with such a determination, as if he'd win the greatest prize if he could tag me. I juked and jived as best I could, and I lasted for a while before all of a sudden another boy joined in to try and tag me. Before I know it, a giant wave of kids were flying towards me in their mission to tag me. I again tried to juke, jive, duck, dodge, basically everything short of flying to get away from them. However, I was engulfed by the kids in about a second, and found myself in a mosh pit of around 20 little Hondurans. The kids, feeling very satisfied that they got me, decided that the game was over. As I was walking away, ready for a nap and a drink of water, one of them yells out, "Tio David! Quere jugar futbol?" I think for a second, turn around, and run off for another game.

This time of the day, where we play games with the kids, is a daily occurance. It is especially true this week because the kids are on a break from school. As such, the kids are around the foundation all the time. This includes the time we spent today cleaning and organizing the library, taking an inventory of the foundation's store, and organizing all the shoes we brought to Honduras for Operation Barefoot. We roughly upacked, inventoried, assigned, and organized 330 pairs of shoes this morning. On thursday, we are going to give all these shoes to the children of the community. The store we inventoried helps to support the financial needs of the foundation. The room with all the items we needed to go through was stacked almost to the ceiling with boxes that needed to be opened, sorted, and inventoried. We got about halfway through the job today, and hopefully we'll finish tomorrow. Once we were done for the day with our jobs, we cleaned ourselves up and got ready for time with the kids and for dinner. Playing with the kids is the most exhausting, tiring, and most exciting part of the day. Today alone, I jump roped, played tag, soccer, hopscotch, hide and go seek, and duck duck goose. I twirled the kids in circles, threw them in the air, turned them upside down, and gave them piggy backs. This is all in addition to the time spent talking with the kids (or at least trying), and doing my best to get to know them. After all of this, our group took a deep breath, ate dinner, and got ready for round two; Bed time is still 2 hours away.

The thing I most cherish about the kids of the foundation is the love that they show you. It is so unconditional and so pure because often times, these kids have not been shown much, or any love in their lives. As such, love is the one thing that they crave more than anything. I wish that I could somehow share with you how getting a hug from one of the kids feels like. I wish I could tell you in some cohesive way what an awesome feeling it is when you gain the trust and friendship of one of the kids down here. I wish I could relate to you the truly horrendous and unspeakable past some of these kids come from. As an example, today two young boys, William and Thomas were dropped off at the foundation by their grandmother. Their dad died recently. Their mother, who now lives in Mexico, gave them to their grandmother to care for them. The grandmother, being overwhelmed and probably unable to support the boys, brought both the boys and their birth certificates to the foundation this afternoon in order to sign them over. They most likely have been living in the streets for the past couple of years. This is only one story - there are so many more to tell.

The work that the foundation does here in La Paz, Honduras is very necessary and important. This place, and the people involved with it, try to turn the most bleak and desperate situations into bright and promising futures. It is also necessary and important because the foundation relates the story of Jesus and the love he has for them, reinforces it, and strengthens it through prayers, songs, and Bible studies. This place not only gives the kids a physical home, but a spiritual one also. I know that there is still much to be done here in Honduras, and in this city. I pray that God blesses the work being done here, and also the work being done by our group.

Busy,busy day.

This day has been a busy one. After a yummy breakfast of pancakes and honey we loaded in the truck and went into the community to invite kids who aren't often scene at the foundation. It was difficult to see how they live in poverty while we are so blessed. We have the potential to see 57 new kids this week for the Saturday presentation (which is happening on Friday). After one of my favorite lunches of quesadillas and fresh salsa the group split up with some going on a journey to the caves and some on a quest for a pet pig.

after preparing a macaroni and cheese dinner we took the kids to the fair in La Paz.You know the kids are excited when they screech and start running in circles and this is what happened when we told them we were going. The fair was an experience in itself. Things are not "monitored" like they are in the USA but the kids loved it none the less.

God is working in so many ways here. Peoples' lives that have been touched in the past, are with us in the present and will benefit in the future. I feel honored to be a part of this wonderful community of people who give so much and let their God light shine so bright.

Where to begin......

Yesterday was super busy! TONS of children arrived in the morning and it carried into the afternoon where we had around 40 children baptized in the chapel! What an experience!!!! At first, we were a bit apprehensive at the sight of a full house at the Foundation's chapel but with deep breaths and prayer, we all made it through and the joy in the faces of the people was priceless!

That evening, we followed with dinner and a great celebration! There was lots of dancing and laughing. We did the electric slide to Michael Jackson and fist pumped for hours! To see the Foundation being used as a safe place in the community was eye opening for many!

The weather is beautiful and we are looking forward to taking the children to the carnival near by! There is a lot in store for the week and we can't wait to share it all with you!

Dia Numero Uno

Beauty of a day seeing the sunrise from the plane above Orlando, and sunset from the bus in La Paz.

We've successfully made the long journey down to to La Paz, Honduras. Early flights and lots of luggage defined our morning of travel. Once we landed in San Pedro Sula, we smooshed ourselves in a classic Central American van (meaning it was decorated with paintings of Jesus), and enjoyed the 4 hour tour of the countryside until we arrived at the Foundation around dusk. The kids greeted us at the gate with flags, singing, and of course, hugs. We were swiftly guided into the chapel for a few more welcome songs, then accompanied to the restaurant for a yummy dinner of taquitos. After dinner, we settled into the chapel, us resting in the chairs and the kids tittering excitedly on the steps. As we anticipated a few more simple songs from the foundation kids, four decked-out Honduran men filed into the chapel singing and playing mariachi music that quickly filled the whole building. We clapped along and grinned at the fantastic show that was being put on for us. As the night ended, we decompressed from our day of new experiences on the roof, all reflecting on how amazing the children of love are, and how unbelievably welcoming and grateful they are to have us here. However, we're the lucky ones to be here experiencing their incredible love, and we're all excited to continue this fantastic week.

On Sunday we will decisively be baptizing somewhere between 28 and 3 local children, so look out for the coming accounts of those adventures.

Medical Mission Trip

Our next mission trip to the Children of Love Foundation in LaPaz Honduras leaves on Friday, July 16.  A small group of doctors, nurses and assistants will provide medical exams and assistance to the children and families who live and worship at the foundation.  Watch here for details.

Saturday morning and afternoon events

When I arrived here last Friday I was a bit overwhelmed. On my flight from Atlanta to San Pedro Sula there were at least 50 Americans who were doing missions all over Honduras so I could hear a lot of English on the plane. Customs was a breeze and Maria greeted me with a welcome sign. I jumped in the truck with Maria and brothers Teka and Rolando (none of the three spoke ANY English) for the 3 hour ride to La Paz. (I ended up sleeping most of the way ) When I arrived at the Foundation the kids welcomed me showed me to my room and I had something to eat in the restaurant. I was able to spend the whole next day with the kids and helping Doris. I would say that this was my favorite time while I was here but I can't pick a favorite. Too many come to mind.

Today I slept in for an extra hour to 7 and let me tell you, that extra hour goes a long way. We had "Saturday school" and talked about the good samaritan. After the lesson the older kids went outside the foundation to pick up trash while the little ones did crafts. We had at least 175 people here today. A presentation from Teka and his dance school was a highlight for the crowd. Of course they had the Americanos on the dance floor.

Later in the afternoon we planned a big surprise for the kids. As they all held hands and rounded the corner of the building they were pelted with water balloons from the roof. I am not sure that they have been that surprised by anything in a long time. The screaming was hysterical. Hopefully Ann has some good video.

After a Chinese dinner...... yes I said Chinese........ we had a fiesta and danced and played with OUR children because as Tio Steve explained we are all from the same family, God's family, and always will be no matter where we are our love for them will never go away.

Trust me when I say. I will cry when I leave.

Saturday, April 10th

Saturday is always a special day at the Foundation. Every week neighborhood children enjoy a community program sponsored by the Children of Love Foundation, which is similar to the Bible School we provided this week. Our story today is about the Good Samaritan and the children will help to clean up the neighborhood as a demonstration of how we can show love for our neighbors. After lunch, we will head to the city park to sing songs about Jesus, and tell about what Jesus is doing at the Children of Love Foundation.. Please pray that the people of La Paz will see the Children of Love Foundation as a place that cares for them with the love of Jesus.

Busy Bee's

Today was a busy day! Early this morning the group was separated into several groups to do some labor around the grounds. One group worked on fixing the bleachers, another group worked in the garden and another worked in the kitchen to prepare the American dinner for tonight. After working from seven to nine we ate a delicious breakfast that consisted of pancakes and orange drink. Later in the day some of us ventured to the Market in Comayagua. Upon returning home we were shuffled out again to watch some of the kids in a soccer and basketball game. Our American dinner tonight consisted of cheese pizza, soda, apple pie & ice cream! The kids loved it! We are all looking forward to another great day tomorrow!

I woke up this morning and Brmmmmm. We walked the kids to their school and it was majestic. I was tired so i took a Siesta on the road. Later we bought a lot of lumber to repair the green bleachers. We made some crowns with the ninos and said some prayers. We also ate dinner in the restaurant. I washed my clothes, i mean i had them washed. mucho take it easy.

Today we share about Noah. Pray that the children understand that it is only God who has the power to save and that He provides all that is necessary to live. We will be helping the children to understand that just as Noah was saved by faith, we are too. That by trusting the Word of God and salvation through Jesus, we can accomplish the tasks God sets before us as a witness to His amazing love.

Wednesday's Events.

Hola mis amigos! Today was definitely a day to remember on our trip. It was full of children, love, a few surprises... we started out early in the morning with a breakfast of french toast (YUMMM), and then a few of us walked the younger ninos to school. Later in the morning, we began our second day of VBS, focusing on Jonah and Whale. All went well, with fun songs, crafts, and games as always. ;)

During the second VBS of the day, Tio Jeremy definitely brought down the house... literally. Jeremy was fixing all the cracks on the roof of the chapel when suddenly it broke from underneath him, right in time for crafts! Luckily he caught himself and was able to pull himself back up. Thank God he wasn't harmed nor anyone of us in the chapel. I'm sure the video will be up on youtube soon enough.... (joke)

Abuelita and Mama Doris's adult womens group is going very well, having even more women than yesterday. Mama Doris was very pleased that there are so many wanting to know and learn about Jesus, and that they want to continue coming.

Looking forward to another fun filled day with the children and teaching them about Jesus! :)

Wednesday, April 7th

The Bible stories today tell the story of Jonah and the Big Fish. Please pray that the message of God's grace and love for all people reaches the children and their families. We will encourage today that the children go home and share this message with their families so also pray that they have the confidence and courage to tell others all that they have heard.

The weather is beautiful this morning. We had a nice group for Jonah and the big fish this morning. A couple in our group are struggling with feeling good so please pray for them. We are trying to record some clips so if you don't catch the live viewing you can watch the recording.

Hola! This morning we woke up with our hugs and kisses from the children. We then walked the kids to school and prepared for VBS. Today was our first VBS and it went awesome. In the morning we had about 30 children. We sang many songs, learned about the big catch of fish, made our own fish, and played lots of games. We talked with the kids on how they can tell others about God and be "fishers of men." To go with the theme, we gave the kids whale crackers that they loved. We then had a little down time before the afternoon VBS. This afternoon, we had about 30 children again. We had a blast! What amazing children! While we had VBS, Abuelita (Audrey) led a Bible study with the mothers who brought their children to the foundation. They really enjoyed having this time to learn more about God. It was such a great opportunity for them to sit together and have their own Bible class.

Tonight it rained, so the kids had to play inside. In the kitchen, we brought in blocks of wood and the kids built with them. We saw who could build the tallest building and built our own houses. We also helped the kids with their homework and read many books. What a great opportunity to sit and talk with the kids! They love the Spanglish!

I have been to Honduras several times and I am still amazed every time by the unconditional love of these children! They open their hearts to us and put their complete trust in us. Words cannot describe what an amazing place this is! It has been so much fun to walk through La Paz and see children that we know on the streets saying Hola Tia or Hola Tio. They too are such a blessing to us! Their excitement in coming to VBS and learning about God is so contagious. It is so neat to see all of these kids grow in their faith through the years! This place is a truly Amazing place!

Buenos Noches

Buenos noches hoy es lunes noches -- Greetings to our brothers and sisters in America from your brothers and sister in Honduras. This morning we were up at 6 am for pancakes and coffee and juice for breakfast and then walked the children from the Foundation to school -- these were the children in the lower grades. The upper grade children did there chores around the Foundation like washing their clothes, sweeping out the rooms, working in the garden. 1/2 of the team went to a plantation owned by Doris and friend Woody to cut down bananas. She also grows coffee plants there. My team came home to fix bags to give to new mothers in the hospital. We had a small snack of fresh fruit - papaya & mangoes when we returned from this 3 hour walk to town.

After a tasty lunch of salsa and tortillas, the older children headed off to school. I couldn't believe I saw Anthony playing soccer in bare feet on a concrete play ground! The team had the opportunity to watch laborious of preparing the coffee bean from the plantation to get ready for sale in the foundation store. I could go on for many pages talking about how hungry these kids are for learning about Jesus their Savior. We have felt your prayers being answered while here so keep them coming & we'll see you all shortly.

Monday, April 5th Pictures

Monday morning

It is another warm Sunny day in La Paz. We were up at about 5:30 a.m. to eat some breakfast (pancakes) with the kids. The youngest (K-3) leave at about 6:30 to be at school by 7 a.m. They return home just after noon. The older (4-8) kids leave at noon for a 12:30 start.

Jeremy, Anthony, Ann, Pru & Zeyas drove up to the coffee and banana plantation and cut us a fresh load of bananas. The rest of us walked to the elementary school to donate some supplies and then over the the hospital to give a welcome gift to some newborns and their mothers.

We have some projects and VBS prep this afternoon. Lunch is cheese tortillas with some delicious salsa.

Easter Miracles

It's a wonder.  A marvel.  An extraordinary event.  Today was one of those days.  To hear again the story of how amazing the God of this universe is.  To hear that He cares for us enough to send His Son into this world to become one of us and live the life we live.  To know that Jesus suffered and died and rose again for one purpose:  to have us in heaven with Himself.

This miracle then transforms into the miracles of our every day lives.  The chance to share this love with someone else.  The chance to speak "He is Risen" (Christus a resucitado!) and hear the voice of others who know and understand.  The chance to enjoy all that God gives us in this world even in the midst of trouble.

And it really isn't chance.  It is the Holy Spirit working in us that brings about all these things.  So whether we are in La Paz Honduras or Oviedo Florida, we are sharing this great news with those around us.  So whether we are young or old, we know that ours is a simple, childlike faith.  It is so simple.  For God so loved the world, He sent His one and only son that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.

We pray that you see this in our mission trip today.  Sharing the Good News while walking in the streets.  Easter egg hunts.  Sitting in the new pool.  Coloring with the children.

What a miracle!  Living life in faith.  Nothing could be better.

Good Afternoon!

After spending some time in worship this morning, the children went on an Easter egg hunt. They had such a great time! The candy was eaten within minutes and then it all began...... Mama Doris brought down an inflatable pool! Everyone was lurking around, wanting to get in and finally, a group plotted on Teca and threw him in! All the children changed and spent time in the water, including...... Jesus! Actually, Tio Steve just looked like Jesus sitting in the water with the children as they all gathered around him. He was definitely the calm to that storm! haha

He is Risen!

This morning we woke up at 4AM to walk through the streets. We sang songs about Jesus's resurrection and shot off fireworks. It was interesting to see the police officer's faces when we shot fireworks off right in front of their station and sang. We also handed out eggs to the people of the town that were filled with cross necklaces. Everyone looked like they enjoyed our singing, and some even sang along. When we got back we stuffed Easter eggs, made breakfast, and sang songs with the kids. We just finished breakfast and now we're looking forward to the church services and the Easter egg hunts. :)

Saturday Evening

We're here! Thank the Lord. We are all safe and sound (and maybe a little sore from sitting so long today!) Nobody sick. Nobody lost. All our luggage arrived.

The flight from Atlanta was delayed for luggage, then a bunch of planes trying to take off but we got in the air about an hour late. There was a little turbulence on the flight but otherwise okay. The end result was that we didn't leave the SAP airport until about 1 p.m.

The drive turned out to be interesting too. Because of the HolyDay, there was a lot of traffic. Some of the nice motorcycle police decided that to keep things safe they would escort traffic for about 20 miles (too bad it was at about 20 mph). Then a traffic jam in Cumoyagua had us take the 'shortcut' to La Paz and..... So, the 3 hour drive ended up being a little over 4 and 1/2 hours. (So after sitting in airports for 3 hours, planes for 6 hours and 4 hours on a bus, well.....)

The extra time did let us buy a 14 slices of watermelon ($3) and then pineapple ($1) and a final stop for some cookies and water.

Just got the Internet working after a couple issues. (10:21 p.m. EST)

We were greeted when we arrived with a special banner for Abuleta (Grandma Audrey) and then the other children carrying both the Honduran and American flags. We had lots of hugs from the kids and then unloaded the bus.

We had a great supper tonight of chicken empanadas in the restaurant. After supper, we were entertained with a medley of spanish and english songs including Amazing Grace and How Great Thou Art.

We then did get some things unpacked and ready for the Easter Egg hunt in the morning. There is rain in the area so we probably won't make the 3 a.m. walk through town.

Well, my brain (and my bottom) need to go to bed. We are all looking forward to celebrating Easter here tomorrow! May the Lord bless your celebration and worship!

We are all safe and sound in Atlanta. We have about an hour and 45 minutes before we leave for San Pedro Sula. We will post again about 5 p.m. Eastern time when we arrive at the foundation.

Saturday Prayer Request

Saturday, April 3rd

Today we are traveling to La Paz, Honduras.  We left the church parking lot at 4:30 this morning, and should be arriving at the Children of Love Foundation at about 8:00 P.M. We will be tired, but also excited about what is ahead. Please pray for our save travel as we embark and that the Lord would work through us to be examples of His love. Also, please pray that the Lord would prepare the hearts of the people we encounter in Honduras, to receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Saturday Morning

It's 5:30 a.m and we are all sitting comfortably waiting for our flight to Atlanta.  Everything thing is on time and we only lost 6 lbs of Peanut Butter and a couple pounds of jelly in a bag check/carry on switch.  Pray for smooth flights!

Almost back!

Landed safely in Miami :) now just customs, security, and one more plane away from being home. Miss the kids already!!

Saturday, March 13^th

Saturday is always a special day at the Foundation. Every week neighborhood children enjoy a community program sponsored by the Children of Love Foundation, which is similar to the Bible School we provided this week. Today is extra special however, because police officers and the mayor of La Paz will be visiting so that we can thank them and honor their work. Please pray that the people of La Paz will see the Children of Love Foundation as a place that cares for them with the love of Jesus. Also, pray that the relationships with the political leaders of La Paz will grow and then provide greater opportunities to spread the Gospel.

Our group has just finished bible study a few minutes ago after yet another fun filled, adventurous, and exhausting day.  Every night, after we sing with the children and pray before their bedtime, or St. Luke's team gathers in the chapel for a quick Bible study and discussion.  In these meetings we share our highs and lows, or anything else that's on our mind.  While every night has been filled with great thoughts and discussion, tonight was different.  You must understand that for the past 5 days we have all been running around after children, teaching bible school to hundreds of kids every day, and doing so many other small things that it all catches up to you.  In addition we all have shared so many priceless, amazing, and indescribable experiences together as a group that the "shock" of the feelings and emotions catches up with us as well.  Tonight, Bible study began with a short story read by pastor Abel about Dr. Maximillian Kolbe, a Franciscan priest who was incarcerated at Auschwitz during world World War II.  This man volunteered to trade places with a condemned man at the camp.  The offer to trade places was accepted and as a result, Dr. Kolbe died in a portion of the camp dedicated to execution through starvation.  Silence filled the room after pastor finished reading the story.  

Today in morning and afternoon bible school, we taught the children a similar story. More than 2,000 years ago, a man named Jesus willingly traded places with you and me.  This man was true God; A man that loved us so much that he came down from heaven to earth.  He took upon himself our sins, was crucified for them, and then rose again so that through him we can have new life.

It is truly remarkable to see the total dichotomy of good and evil in both of the stories.  While the Nazi's were brutally executing him in a camp dedicated to death, Dr Kolbe sacrificed his life so another might live.  Christ was put to death a horrific and barbaric way, by the very people he came to save.  While not to such an extreme degree, the same situation exists here in Honduras.  All throughout the country, specifically from what I have seen in La Paz, poverty is rampant.  The people live in such primitive structures with none of the amenities nor comforts of home.  Hunger is a normality for many of this city's residents, primarily children.  Good male role models are few and far between, women are seen by men as the person who has the baby and makes the food.   Many people here know of God, but do not know him nor of his unconditional love.   And then in the midst of all of this seemingly hopeless despair, there is an oasis in the desert, so to say.  And it is the Children of Love Foundation. Here, orphans who come from the most dire and horrible situations are cared for, loved, and are taught of the love of Christ.  Here, the kids can have an opportunity to have a normal life.  Words cannot describe the feeling you get when you get a hug from one of the kids here.  The warmth and unconditional love given to you by the child is remarkable.  The hug and smile from the child in itself are proof that Christ is alive and well here in Honduras and that he can turn a seemingly hopeless situation turn into countless blessings and opportunities.

I pray that this place continues to grow and I also pray that the children here continue to grow in love and faith

my week

I thought I knew what to expect from this trip before I got here because of stories my sister Leah had told me and pictures she has shown. My expectations have been met and exceeded. I have received love and hugs from people I hardly know but feel more warmth from than some people I have known for years. I cooked with the women in the kitchen in a flurry of chaos of trying to feed 200 people when we were expecting 50 and the only way to communicate was gestures and eye contact. There where a lot of laughter and hugs after. I have seen dwellings that would be condemned in the states but to these beautiful people it is home. I don't know if I have ever seen a place that God is so obviously present in my life. Even the poorest of people in this community want to share what they have. There is a young boy Walter who lives behind the Foundation. He and his family have next to nothing yet today he brought us nuts from a tree by his house and yesterday he shared mangos with us. That to me is amazing. I think so many of us take for granted what we have and feel sometimes we cant give because we need to make sure we have enough for ourselves. I myself am guilty of. However, I hope when I get home I will remember the people and experiences here and remember that I have more than enough to share. Thank you God for this opportunity to get perspective on life and my faith. I can't wait to share more when I get home. Night every one!

Friday, March 12^th

Our final Bible School lesson with the children today, focuses on the Resurrection of Jesus. Because He lives, we will live forever with Christ. Please pray that the children can see themselves as God’s beloved treasure and that Jesus will always love them and care for them. Also today, we will be bringing gifts of baby clothes and infant supplies to new mothers at the La Paz hospital. Pray that the citizens of La Paz see the Foundation as a source of generous Christian love, and that the Holy Spirit would draw them to know more about that love.

STEVEN DUDA'S BLOG!!! <3 <3

Today was a very crazy day.Instead of our usual 20 older kids who show up for the morning VBS session we ended up with 200 kids. We were running around like chickens with our heads cut off the entire morning. Apparently the teachers closed school and instead took the kids to VBS. In addition to the chaos, I was walking outside of the chapel when I stumbled on a kid lying on his stomach losing his lunch. I immediately found Mama Dorris and she took care of the kid. Mama Dorris said the kid overheated and I possibly saved his life by stumbling upon him. After the morning chaos the rest of the day went pretty smoothly.

This morning we woke up bright and early to delicious Honduran coffee. We were assigned chores and picked up garbage around the Foundation, which was a good bonding experience with Rosibel. The kids find our random Spanish sentences amusing.

The first group of kids arrived, and we started the day with musical chairs (Natalie: I broke one of them sitting down too quickly) and limbo, which the children loved. It was very shocking to us all when during the message when Pastor Abel asked the kids if they needed to earn God's love, and they all replied "si." It's good to know that children who know so little about the Bible can learn the good news of the gospel. They also had so much fun making bracelets with beads. The afternoon group painted with watercolors. They were so proud of their paintings, and even made some for their "tios y tias." (Natalie: Alex painted a bright orange Jesus fish on my head that many of the children laughed at.) (Alex: That was pay back for the bright blue streak she painted down my cheeks.)

After a yummy dinner, one of the kids, Walter, took us to his house and offered us mangoes. He climbed up to the top of a tree in his backyard and tossed us down several mangoes. It's amazing that those here who have so little are so willing to give what they do possess. Edty, who works in the kitchen, gladly cut the mangoes up for us and we put salt on them (after a long and confusing conversation with Walter in Spanglish about what to put on them).

Finally, we had an awesome (POSSUM) service led by pastor Ed. We took communion with some of the confirmed children and at the end, the kids received quilts made by a group at St. Luke's. Their faces lit up at the sights of them, and they were even more thrilled when they saw the patterns sown inside. Now we're blogging on the roof under a perfectly clear, starry sky. BUENOS NOCHES!!

Thursday, March 11^th

Today we talk about John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him will not perish, but have eternal life.” We will tell the children how God’s love sent Jesus to suffer and die on the cross to forgive our sins, and to make us God’s children through faith. Pray that our lesson is successful and that we can help the children understand that they do not have to earn God’s love but instead, when they believe in Jesus, they already have God’s love. Tonight, the team will enjoy a little free time together, and will have a dinner out experience at a local restaurant.

Wednesday, March 10^th

The Lost is Found!  Today, the Bible stories tell the children that Jesus loves us so much that He searches for us. They are hearing the parables of “The Lost Coin” and “The Lost Sheep.”  Today we also, are visiting with Missionary Rev. Edmond Auger, and a young man from Honduras named Tulio, who is studying to become a Lutheran pastor. These conversations will explore how our Lutheran mission presence might expand in Honduras. Please pray that the Children will see that God’s love reaches out to them through Jesus, and that they will always have God’s love by trusting in Jesus. Also, pray that the Lord would bless the conversations with Pastor Auger and Tulio.

Its Wednesday Morning!

WOW! is the only thing to say about yesterday.  Several of us participated in a school parade with the younger kids in the morning and then rushed back just in time for our morning Bible school. We had a small group of around 15 kids and enjoyed our Bible lesson and video, water color painting, and a few rounds of musical chairs.  Just as we were wrapping up lunch with those children our Foundation kids and some little ones from the neighborhood came home and we spent time reading books (bi-lingual books are such a blessing--my favorite with The Little Mermaid which put a BIG smile on Alejandra's face.  And then the afternoon....we were overwelmed as truckloads of kids showed up still in their school uniforms and we ran out of food for lunch!  It was chaotic to say the least, but we managed to feed everyone eventually and were blessed with the appearance of Pastor Ed Auger of Lutheran World Missions and his Honduran mentee Tulio.  It was a blessing in the chaos to have another Spanish/English speaker as we "punted" a bit.  By the time we began the Bible video and lesson we had a full chapel.  Our sign in sheets reflect a total of 211 children and adults total!  AMAZING...and a little scary since we planned and packed for 100! But we are getting creative and keeping the number one rule--be flexible. 

This is my fourth trip here. It is amazing to watch how these kids have changed and grown and how the CLF has grown and changed as well.  It is fun to know all of their names and be able to help others learn. Every time I come I fall in love with them all over again.  In many ways they are just like American kids...they like to play tag and giggle and color and snuggle up to read books. And yet their is something different. Maybe it's because they are a family...a family of 22 kids who take care of one another, eat together, pray together, and sing together...and when we come here they welcome us into that family with hugs and kisses and joy.  They call us Aunt and Uncle and invite us to stand in the mealtime and prayer time circle to pray.  

Please pray for us today.  The numbers are exciting but we don't want them to get in the way of being effective.

Today, March 8, we woke up to walk the younger kids that live at the foundation to school this morning. It was pretty amazing to see all the school children lined up in the courtyard of the school as they were arriving and we had a a first for the Honduras Mission trips. Mama Dorris talked to all the children in the court yard and had us all come up and the kids faces lit up! Then Mama Dorris invited all of the children to the Vacation Bible School (VBS) that we are holding for all of the kids starting tomorrow and had Pastor Abel attempt to speak to the kids in Spanish. We all were petrified when she had said that. But to our surprise he did very well and the kids were very entertained with his personality. Surprisingly, the kids here in Honduras love when we come down and try to speak Spanish to them. But we all had a great laugh about the whole first time event at the school. Not to soon after we walked around town with Mama Dorris to talk to the parents of the kids to tell them about the VBS and to invite the kids that we ran into along the way. Later we headed to Coffee Land and were unable to harvest any coffee beans, oranges, and bananas. So, we ran around and explored the plantation like we were little kids exploring the vast wilderness again. To end the night, we had a bonfire with the kids of the foundation. We roasted marshmallows and sang songs around the fire. Then the kids gave us all these wonderful hugs overflowing with love just before they went off to get ready for bed.

Tuesday, March 9^th

Today is the first day of Bible School and our theme is “Jesus, the Son of God.” We are talking about Jesus’ Baptism. Please pray that the children would begin to know who their Savior is and what He has done for them, and would begin to experience His great love for them. Tonight we will be “caroling” in the city of La Paz. We will stroll through the center of town singing songs about Jesus, and telling folks about what Jesus is doing at the Children of Love Foundation.

Monday Prayer Request

Monday, March 8^th

We have our first full day ahead of us!  We are walking door to door in the neighborhoods surrounding the Children of Love Foundation this morning, inviting children to come to our Bible School Program starting tomorrow. Tonight we will be getting reacquainted with the kids at the children’s home, and roasting marshmallows with them. A real treat!! Please pray that the Lord would bring many children to tomorrow’s Bible School and that the hearts and minds of everyone would be open and ready for the week ahead.

We had no idea. We began the day in Orlando, running through the
routines of checking bags, going through security, and sitting and
waiting. Our first flight arrived in Miami in a quick 43 minutes, just
as i was about to take a nap (Catching up from my six hours of sleep
last night :/) as the flight attendant announced our descent. After
much deliberation, chinese was on the menu at MIA After eating and
playing some cards in the airport, we boarded the plane for San Pedro
Sula, finding it funny that everything said over the intercom came in
two different languages. We almost made it the whole way without
incident, but at the very end, an undisclosed team member (John Allen)
decided to revisit the chinese he had enjoyed just hours before. A few
napkins later, and we were riding in the Jesus van
(http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=4037190&id=518311874) on our
way to La Paz. We made our only stop at a full service gas station,
where two bags of water were excitingly purchased for the bargain of 4
limpiras!! (that's like 20 cents)(and yes, bags. it was awesome.)
Soon (three hours later) we arrived to sounds of firecrackers and
wooping children. We unloaded and listened to an inspired 'God Bless
America' as best as any Honduran children could sing it :) We were
then immediately bombarded with hugs and shown by them to our rooms.
We ran around and learned some Spanish, and enjoyed a wonderful meal
of chicken empanadas. Now we're sitting on the roof, listening to the
sound of roosters and frogs, and looking at the incredible sky God put
there for us. We had no idea, but now we do, and we (at least i)
couldn't love it more :)

Sunday Prayer Request

Sunday, March 7^th

Today we are traveling to La Paz, Honduras.  We left the church parking lot at 6:45 this morning, and should be arriving at the Children of Love Foundation at about 8:00 P.M. We will be tired, but also excited about what is ahead. Please pray for our save travel as we embark and that the Lord would work through us to be examples of His love. Also, please pray that the Lord would prepare the hearts of the people we encounter in Honduras, to receive the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

March Trip - Agenda

With a heart towards spreading the Gospel message of Jesus Christ into all the world, 13 members of St. Luke’s Lutheran Church will be spending this week on a mission trip to the children’s home in La Paz, Honduras, called the Children of Love Foundation.
o We will be involving the children at the Foundation in an outreach effort to their local community of La Paz. We will provide a week long Bible School program of activities, Bible stories, songs, and meals to the neighborhood children.
o In addition to this, we will be reaching out with gifts and the love of Jesus to patients at the hospital in La Paz.
o We will also be meeting with representatives of LCMS World Missions to continue the discussion about a possible mission congregation in La Paz.
